"Bugi, We Knew You'd Make a Splash"... Busan's Communication Character Wins Main Prize at K-Design Award

Are you familiar with "Bugi," the character representing Busan? Bugi has made a splash on the international design stage with an exciting achievement.

The city of Busan announced on September 4 that its official communication character, Bugi, has won the "Winner" award in the Character and Communication category at the K-Design Award, one of Asia's top three design awards.

The K-Design Award is an international competition hosted by the design specialist company Design Sori Co., Ltd. and is considered the most prestigious event in the Korean design industry. This year, 3,070 entries from 23 countries around the world were submitted, and the winners were selected by a panel of 37 experts from various countries.

Bugi was created based on the motif of a seagull, a symbol of Busan. The character features red smart glasses and customized shoes that reflect local industries, embodying the city's unique identity. Bugi's simple yet sophisticated design has been recognized for its versatility in promotional content and merchandise, as well as its potential for broader use in policy materials, online content, and event venues.

Recently, the city installed three Bugi-themed sculptures at Sajik Baseball Stadium. These works, which depict the dynamic moments of a batter, pitcher, and catcher, have become popular photo spots among baseball fans and families attending games.

Won Youngil, spokesperson for the city of Busan, stated, "This award demonstrates that Bugi is more than just a character; it is a communication symbol that embodies the city's identity and has been recognized for its global competitiveness. We will continue to expand the use of Bugi in policy promotion and tourism experience spaces."
