At Hajodae Beach in Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Province, at around 12:23 p.m. on the 30th, a man in his 20s, referred to as A, was involved in an accident where he fell into the water while trying to rescue a drowning person.
An on-site safety manager immediately entered the water and rescued A, bringing him ashore. The Gangneung Coast Guard and fire authorities performed CPR using an automated external defibrillator (AED) and then transported A to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
According to witnesses, A heard B, who had fallen into the water, calling for help and jumped into the sea to deliver a life jacket to B. It is reported that the accident occurred during this process.
C, another companion of A in his 20s, also entered the sea and fell into the water but is not in life-threatening condition. B reportedly received the life jacket and managed to get out of the water on his own.
Hajodae Beach officially closed on the 24th. However, due to the continued heat, tourists have kept visiting, and four safety managers will remain stationed at the beach until the 31st. The Gangneung Coast Guard plans to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
