Gwangju City Council Urges City’s Mediation in 'GGM Labor-Management Conflict'

The Gwangju City Council has called for the city’s active intervention to resolve the labor-management conflict at Gwangju Global Motors (GGM).
On August 27, members of the Industrial Construction Committee of the Gwangju City Council issued a statement expressing concern that “the labor-management conflict at GGM is escalating to a level that threatens the very existence of the company.”
The council members warned that this conflict could have serious repercussions not only within the company but also across the entire regional economy. They particularly emphasized that “the collapse of the Gwangju-type job model could turn Gwangju into a city avoided by investors and deal a critical blow to the attraction of future strategic industries such as artificial intelligence (AI).”
The council members also stated, “As the largest shareholder, the city of Gwangju must take responsible and proactive steps to mediate,” and strongly urged Mayor Kang Gijung to personally intervene in the extreme standoff.
Meanwhile, the labor and management at GGM are facing a severe confrontation, following the breakdown of wage and collective bargaining negotiations, disputes over the repayment of loans totaling 196 billion won, and now controversy over the assault of a union branch leader.
