President Lee Holds First South Korea-U.S. Summit 83 Days After Inauguration
Trump: "Will Meet with Kim Jong Un Soon"
President Lee: "Hoping for a Renaissance in Shipbuilding and Manufacturing with South Korea's Participation"
On the 25th (local time), President Lee Jaemyung held his first summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and said, "It is difficult to improve inter-Korean relations, but President Trump is the only person who can do it." He added, "If President Trump acts as a peacemaker, I will do my best to support him as a pacemaker."
During the summit held at the Oval Office of the White House, President Lee made these remarks after President Trump said he would soon meet with Kim Jong Un, Chairman of North Korea's State Affairs Commission. President Trump's response to President Lee's comments was a smile.
President Lee also stated, "Your role as a peacemaker stands out not only during your term protecting peace in the United States, but also on the global stage." He added, "This is the first time a president has shown such interest in global peace issues and achieved tangible results like you have."
He continued, "If possible, I hope you will help create peace on the Korean Peninsula, which remains the only divided nation in the world."
President Lee further added, "I hope you will meet with Kim Jong Un (Chairman of North Korea's State Affairs Commission), build a Trump World in North Korea so that I can play golf there, and play a historic role as a maker of world peace."
Additionally, President Lee said, "The United States is experiencing a renaissance in both shipbuilding and manufacturing, and I hope that Korea can participate in this process together." He conveyed his wishes by saying, "Making America great again is your dream, and it seems America is indeed becoming great again."
Meanwhile, President Lee emphasized, "The Republic of Korea has grown and developed based on a strong South Korea-U.S. alliance, and I hope the alliance can advance into the future not only in military terms but also in economic and scientific technology fields." He stressed, "The people of Korea have high expectations for President Trump."
