Minho Choi: "On the 80th Liberation Day, We Must Honor Our National Identity Through Unity"

"Let us firmly establish the spirit of solidarity in the Republic of Korea, overcome our divided society, unite and harmonize with one another, and together write a proud new chapter in our history."

Mayor Minho Choi of Sejong City made this statement at the 80th Anniversary Liberation Day Celebration.

According to Sejong City, the 80th Anniversary Liberation Day Celebration was held at the Sejong Arts Center, commemorating the meaningful year marking 80 years since the restoration of freedom and independence, and reflecting on the noble spirit of the forebears, as announced on the 15th.

Unlike previous years when the celebration was held at Yeomin Hall in Sejong City Hall, this year's event took place at the Sejong Arts Center, adding significance to the 80th anniversary of Liberation. Approximately 1,200 people attended, including descendants of independence patriots, heads of veterans' organizations, military personnel, students, and citizens.

In his congratulatory address, Mayor Choi stated, "To honor the will of our forebears who dedicated their entire lives to the prosperity of our nation, we must overcome the divisions in our society-across class, generation, ideology, and political camps-and achieve harmony." He emphasized that overcoming a divided society and uniting as one is not only the sole way to honor the will of the forebears, but also the way to fully reclaim and commemorate the identity and historical roots of our country.

He further stated, "To fulfill the will of our forebears who devoted their lives to the independence and prosperity of our nation under Japanese rule, we, as their descendants, must write a proud new chapter in our history." He also stressed that the discovery and recognition of independence activists and national patriots must be continuously carried out not only by the government, but also by the private sector, and that this is a task for both central and local governments.

Mayor Minho Choi added, "On this 80th Liberation Day, I reaffirm my commitment to carry forward the noble spirit of our forebears and to open an even brighter future for Sejong as a strategic city for the future," and stated, "Together with our citizens, we will surely fulfill this historic mission entrusted to us."
