According to the report, President Trump made these remarks during a video conference held that day with European leaders and Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine.

Three sources, including European diplomats and British officials, said, "The United States was willing to provide Ukraine with means to deter future Russian invasions if a ceasefire is reached between Russia and Ukraine."

Emmanuel Macron, President of France, also told reporters after the leaders' call that President Trump expressed his intention that, in order to end Russia's war, the United States and other allies must participate in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.

Arianna Podesta, Deputy Spokesperson for the European Commission, also confirmed at a press conference on the 14th, "During the (leaders') call, President Trump said that the United States would participate (in providing security guarantees)."

When asked whether the United States' shift in policy to express willingness to participate in security guarantees should be considered a diplomatic achievement for Europe, Deputy Spokesperson Podesta replied, "It is not important exactly how we arrived at the current situation. What matters is that the United States said it would do so," emphasizing that "this is one of the very positive outcomes of this call."

This video conference was arranged by Europe and Ukraine, who were concerned about being sidelined in the ceasefire discussions ahead of the summit between President Trump and Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, scheduled for the 15th in Alaska, USA. Their aim was to demand preconditions for negotiations from President Trump. Security guarantees from the United States are a key demand for both Ukraine and Europe.

For this reason, Politico pointed out that European officials' expression of "cautious optimism" after the video conference explains their stance regarding the upcoming U.S.-Russia summit.
