Kim Yo-jong Denies Loudspeaker Dismantlement... Military Says "Removal Still Maintained"

On August 14, the South Korean military responded to Kim Yo-jong, Vice Department Director of the North Korean Workers' Party and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who claimed that North Korea had never dismantled its loudspeakers aimed at the South. The military stated, "We have reported the facts as we have confirmed them, and as of now, the dismantling of the loudspeakers is still in effect."

At a regular briefing at the Ministry of National Defense, Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, addressed Kim Yo-jong's claim, saying, "It is important to be cautious not to be misled by the North's intentions. North Korea has previously made assertions that were not based on fact." The military had previously announced on August 9 that "activities indicating the dismantling of loudspeakers aimed at the South by North Korean troops in some forward areas have been detected."

Regarding the basis for this explanation, Lee stated, "Whatever North Korea announces, there is always an intention behind it. I believe it is necessary not to be easily swayed by such intentions or to accept them as facts without verification."
