Revitalization Expected for Daerim Market Alleyway Businesses

The Dari Village area in Eungam-dong, once densely packed with old houses, will be transformed into a new residential community with approximately 2,900 households.

On August 14, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has officially designated and approved the maintenance plan for the "Housing Maintenance Redevelopment Project" for the areas around 700 and 755 Eungam-dong in Eunpyeong-gu.

These two areas, previously identified as high-risk zones due to aging buildings, steep slopes, and narrow roads, were selected as general neighborhood urban regeneration activation areas in 2019.

Through the redevelopment project, the area is expected to be transformed into a multi-family housing complex with a total of 2,942 units, including 617 public rental units. At 700 Eungam-dong, 15 apartment buildings ranging from three basement levels to 35 above-ground floors will provide 1,456 units. In the 755 Eungam-dong area, 14 apartment buildings of similar scale will offer 1,486 units.

In addition to housing, the project will significantly expand various infrastructure and community facilities, including a public parking lot, park, government office, and childcare facilities. Notably, a new public parking lot with 90 spaces will be built near Daerim Market, which is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local commercial district.

This redevelopment project is being promoted in line with the second-generation urban regeneration policy, which aims for "balanced development and revitalization of declining areas." By combining urban regeneration initiatives with private redevelopment, the plan seeks to revitalize the struggling alleyway businesses around Daerim Market while simultaneously improving the aging residential environment.

Choi Jinseok, Director of Housing at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "This maintenance plan marks the first step in supplying around 3,000 new homes in Eungam-dong to dramatically improve the residential environment. We will do our best to ensure the project proceeds smoothly so that residents can quickly enjoy their new living environment."
