Conductor Myung-Whun Chung will join forces with Japan’s next-generation pianist Mao Fujita at the KBS Symphony Orchestra’s regular concert, scheduled to take place at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on August 29.
The KBS Symphony Orchestra announced that this highly anticipated performance, which has attracted the attention of classical music enthusiasts, is already sold out. On August 13 at 2 p.m., additional seats in the choir section will be made available for booking.
During the concert, Fujita will perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25, followed by a rendition of Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique.”
Born in Tokyo in 1998, Fujita gained recognition after winning the 2017 Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland and taking second place at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition.
Fujita is known as a Mozart specialist, often referred to as the “Mozart of the East.” At the 2021 Verbier Festival in Switzerland, he drew attention by performing all 18 Mozart piano sonatas and Piano Concerto No. 20 over six concerts in two weeks. He became the first Japanese pianist to sign an exclusive contract with Sony Classical, and his debut album, released in 2022, featured all 18 Mozart piano sonatas across five CDs.
In an interview with Korean media ahead of his first solo recital in Korea in February this year, Fujita stated, “Mozart is my favorite composer,” and added, “Although I am still young, I feel fortunate to have developed a unique strength in Mozart.”
The Mozart Piano Concerto No. 25, which Fujita will perform, is notable for its majestic introduction and lyrical melodies.
Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique” was completed during a period of intense romantic turmoil in the composer’s life. Berlioz fell passionately in love with actress Harriet Smithson, who appeared in “Romeo and Juliet,” and ardently pursued her, but after being coldly rejected, he composed “Symphonie Fantastique” while enduring the pain of heartbreak. In this five-movement work, Berlioz dramatically expresses the composer’s obsessive love, fantasies, despair, hallucinations, and death.
The anticipation is heightened as “Symphonie Fantastique” is known to be a work that Myung-Whun Chung interprets with particular affection.
Tickets for the additional choir section seats at this KBS Symphony Orchestra regular concert will be available for reservation starting at 2 p.m. on August 13 through NOL Ticket and the Seoul Arts Center website.
