Jeonnam Province Takes Residents on a Journey Through History for the 80th Anniversary of Liberation Day

On August 10, Jeonnam Province announced that it will hold a variety of commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. These events are designed to honor the noble sacrifices of those who dedicated themselves to the nation's independence and to reflect on the historical significance of liberation together with the residents of the province.

The 80th Liberation Day celebration ceremony, under the theme "Shining Steps with the People, A New Path," will take place at 10 a.m. on August 15 in the Kim Daejung Auditorium at the Jeonnam Provincial Government building.

Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend the event, including descendants of independence activists, members of the Liberation Association, heads of institutions and organizations, and residents who registered through the Jeonnam Province website. The event aims to remind each resident that they are the true owners of the nation and to share the meaning of liberation together.

In particular, six local arts organizations will collaborate to present a musical performance under the theme "Let Us Not Forget, Today." This performance will artistically express the national spirit and the people's strength of Jeonnam residents, who remained unyielding even in the face of adversity in modern and contemporary history.

Additionally, Jeonnam Province plans to designate anti-Japanese independence heritage sites, such as the birthplace and grave of Hwang Hyun in Gwangyang, as "Jeonnam Designated Cultural Heritage." This will be the first such designation among metropolitan governments in Korea and aims to systematically protect and manage these sites.

A variety of other programs are also planned, including a special performance by the Provincial Gugak Orchestra titled "Baekbeom Kim Gu," a special exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day at the Jeonnam Provincial Government Gallery, and historical and cultural experience programs for residents.

Ko Mikyung, Director of the Autonomous Administration Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, "To mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day this year, we have prepared meaningful and diverse programs such as the celebration ceremony, distinguished forums, special performances, and exhibitions. We encourage residents to participate together, reflect on the meaning of liberation, and help foster a province-wide atmosphere of patriotism, with Jeonnam Province taking the lead."

Earlier, in May, Jeonnam Province invited Hwang Hyunpil, director of the History Rectification Research Institute, and in August, Lim Yonghan, director of the Korean Historical Classics Research Institute, to hold distinguished forums as part of efforts to foster the spirit of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day.
