Pohang City Secures 2.6 Billion Won in National Funding... Begins Full-Scale Development of Korean-Style Battery Passport Platform

Proactive Response to the EU Digital Product Passport System, Leading Global Standardization
Synergy with Busan City for Building a Sustainable Battery Industry Ecosystem

Pohang City is set to launch the development of a blockchain-based 'Battery Passport' platform in response to the European Union's introduction of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) system.

The city, together with Busan, was selected as a final recipient in the 2025 Blockchain Public Sector Contest, overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and managed by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), securing 2.6 billion won in national funding.

The 'Digital Product Passport' is a system that stores and shares the entire lifecycle information of products?including production, distribution, use, and disposal?in digital form. The EU plans to expand its application, starting with batteries in 2027 and later including textiles, electronics, and steel.

This project aims to proactively respond to the EU's Digital Product Passport system and to establish a Korean-style battery passport platform that is interoperable, at a time when the strategic necessity for a domestic platform is growing to strengthen competitiveness within the global supply chain.

Through this project, the city will build a Korean-style battery passport platform compatible with the EU system ahead of time and establish an integrated management system for the entire lifecycle of electric vehicle batteries. The collected data will be used for pilot projects in various fields, including parking, charging, safety services, used car transactions and maintenance, as well as battery remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling.

The city has been expanding its secondary battery industry infrastructure by promoting key national projects such as the Battery Recycling Regulation-Free Special Zone, the National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex for Cathode Materials, the Secondary Battery Opportunity Development Special Zone, and the Secondary Battery Global Innovation Park, attracting large-scale corporate investments totaling 14 trillion won.

In particular, by collaborating with Busan Metropolitan City, which has a specialized blockchain cluster, the city aims to maximize synergy in project implementation and take the lead in advancing and global standardizing the platform.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Through cooperation with Busan, we will lead the international standardization of the battery passport and establish an integrated management system for electric vehicle batteries, taking the lead in creating a sustainable battery industry ecosystem."
