On August 6, police launched an emergency search after receiving reports that threatening messages claiming explosives had been planted at Shinsegae Department Store Starfield in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, and at Shinsegae South City in Suji District, Yongin, had been posted online.

According to police, a report was filed with the Yongin Western Police Station stating that "someone posted a comment on YouTube threatening to bomb Shinsegae Department Store." However, the poster did not specify a particular location or time.

Previously, a middle school student who posted an online message claiming to have planted explosives at the Shinsegae Department Store Myeong-dong main branch was apprehended in Jeju. The student, referred to as A, is accused of posting a message on an online community at around 12:36 p.m. the previous day, under the title "Shinsegae Department Store Bombing Notice," in which he claimed to have planted explosives and implied a terrorist act.
