The Seodang Camp, where students experience traditional Korean educational methods and culture while naturally learning manners, respect, consideration, and cooperation, is receiving a positive response.
The Daejeon Lifelong Learning Center Etiquette Education Support Center is running an experiential character education program called "Inseong Ssukssuk Seodang Camp (Ye-deul-a~ Nolja!)" for 15 students in grades 4 to 6 of elementary school from August 5 to August 7, 2025. The program aims to enhance self-esteem and social skills.
Participating students wear traditional attire such as dopo and yugeon, and the camp begins with the traditional entrance ceremony, Goyu-rye.
Next, students make their own study books using the traditional five-stitch binding method, Ochim Anjeongbeop, and participate in seongdok, a reading session where they recite meaningful phrases from classics such as Dongmongsunseup, Yegi, and Sajaseohak. Through these activities, they learn the scholarly attitude and humanistic literacy of scholars from the past.
In addition, during the tea ceremony experience, students learn patience, consideration, respect, and proper behavior through tea table etiquette by brewing tea and learning from the act of waiting. They also acquire communication and cooperation skills through craft activities and traditional games.
On the last day of the Seodang Camp, a graduation ceremony called Chaek-rye is held to mark the completion of the three-day learning experience, and students receive certificates of completion from the director of the Daejeon Lifelong Learning Center.
Woo Changyoung, director of the Daejeon Lifelong Learning Center, said, "I hope this Seodang Camp will be a meaningful time for our students to cultivate proper character and social skills," and added, "I expect them to grow into children who not only experience but also truly feel and practice the values of respect and consideration."
