On August 5, Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeongbok officially assumed office as the 13th president of the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association.
The Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association, established in 2002, is a public institution under the Ministry of Environment. It is responsible for research on water and wastewater technology, evaluation and certification, and hosting the International Water Industry Expo.
Currently, more than 1,300 organizations, groups, and individuals?including the Ministry of Environment, local government water service providers nationwide, related companies, academic societies, and experts?are active members. The president's term is three years, lasting until July 2028.
In his inaugural address, Mayor Yoo emphasized that, in order to address future water challenges, it is necessary to implement efficient water and wastewater management, introduce advanced technologies, and expand facility investments. He stressed that the association, as a public institution, must take responsible action to improve the quality of life for the public.
As key initiatives to achieve this, he proposed strengthening the role of public institutions as governance organizations, establishing an operation system focused on public safety, proactively responding to future environmental issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) and carbon neutrality, supporting domestic water companies in expanding overseas, and professionalizing the improvement and operational management of water and wastewater facilities.
Mayor Yoo stated, "The association will serve as a focal point to ensure that the public can have access to clean water they can drink with confidence anytime and anywhere."
