The National 3·15 Democratic Cemetery Management Office has selected 'Kim Youngjun' as the July honoree for the 3·15 Person Focus.
Kim was the youngest son of Joo Kyungok. He was born in Sinuiju, Pyeonganbuk-do, and in 1946, when he was six years old, he crossed to the South with his family and lived in Seoul. During the Korean War, the family moved to Masan. He attended Wolyeong Elementary School and Masan Middle School, and graduated from Masan High School in March 1960.
On the night of March 15, 1960, while participating in a protest against the 3·15 rigged election, Kim suffered a penetrating gunshot wound to his abdomen and other areas near Masan City Hall. He was taken to the Provincial Masan Hospital for emergency surgery but did not recover and passed away.
Kim Youngjun is currently buried in Section 1, Area 7 of the National 3·15 Democratic Cemetery.
Director Lee Sungchul stated, "We will continue to develop various programs to carry on the spirit of the 3·15 Uprising," and added, "We will strive to make the 3·15 Democratic Cemetery a beloved local landmark for people across the country."
