Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that if the United States wants to resume nuclear negotiations with Iran, it must make clear its position that it will not carry out additional attacks against Iran.
Deputy Minister Takht-Ravanchi made these remarks in an interview with the British broadcaster BBC, reported on the 29th (local time).
He said that the Donald Trump administration had conveyed its intention to return to negotiations with Iran through a mediator, but did not clarify its stance on the very important issue of whether additional attacks would occur during the negotiation process.
He added, "Right now, we are looking for an answer to this question: Will acts of aggression be repeated while we are engaged in dialogue?"
He emphasized, "The United States must be very clear on this extremely important issue," and added, "We want to know what they will offer us to build the trust necessary for such talks."
Deputy Minister Takht-Ravanchi also stated that the timing of the resumption of negotiations and what topics will be included have not yet been discussed.
This is interpreted as an official confirmation that Iran will only come to the negotiating table with the United States if there is a guarantee that no additional attacks against Iran will take place.
When asked whether Iran could reconsider its nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions, Takht-Ravanchi responded, "Why should we agree to such a proposal?"
He said that discussions could be held regarding matters such as the level of nuclear material, but argued, "To demand that we do not enrich, to demand that enrichment be 'zero,' and to threaten bombing if we do not agree, is the law of the jungle."
President Trump has maintained the position that the United States would launch airstrikes against Iran if Iran attempts to develop nuclear weapons again.
At the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit on the 25th, President Trump stated, "We will talk with Iran next week," but did not mention any specifics.
The United States and Iran were scheduled to hold the sixth round of nuclear talks in Oman on the 15th of this month, but the talks were canceled due to Israel's airstrike on Iran.
