On the 29th (local time), Senator Tillis stated in a press release, "As many of my colleagues have noticed over the past year, and sometimes even joked about, I have not been particularly interested in running for re-election," adding, "This is not a difficult decision, and I will not seek another term."

Senator Tillis's announcement comes less than 24 hours after he voted against a procedural motion to advance the tax cut bill, which passed the U.S. Senate late on the night of the 28th. The so-called "one big, beautiful bill," a key component of President Trump's tax agenda, passed the Senate with 51 votes in favor and 49 against. Two Republicans broke ranks and voted against the motion, one of whom was Senator Tillis. He cited the significant cuts to Medicaid (health insurance for low-income individuals) as his reason for opposing the bill.

President Trump strongly criticized Senator Tillis for opposing his core economic policy. On his own social media platform, Truth Social, Trump attacked Tillis, saying, "He is all talk and complaints, not a man of action," and declared that he would support another candidate in future Republican primaries.

President Trump is putting intense pressure on Republican leadership to pass the tax cut bill by July 4, America's Independence Day.
