Since its domestic launch in March 2023, Apple Pay has mainly been supported at convenience stores and large franchise locations. The lack of features that highlight the unique advantages of smartphone-based payment services, such as transit card functionality, has been a barrier to expanding its presence in the Korean market.
The delay in introducing Apple Pay's transit card function has been attributed to several factors. These include the burden on transit card operators to replace their terminals with the 'EMV Contactless' standard adopted by Apple, as well as issues related to paying fees to Apple.
