A supporter of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who attempted to break into public institutions such as police stations while dressed as the Marvel character "Captain America," has been sentenced to prison in the first trial.
On May 28, Judge Koo Changgyu of the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 12 sentenced Mr. Ahn, who was indicted and detained on charges of attempted trespassing, damage to public property, and insult, to one year and six months in prison.
The court stated, "He committed the crimes with the intent to draw public attention in order to achieve his personal and political objectives," and added, "He caused significant disruption to the police officers who responded to the scene or were involved in the investigation of the defendant." The court further explained the sentencing by saying, "During the course of the crimes, he openly displayed an extremely disrespectful attitude toward the police, making severe punishment unavoidable."
Mr. Ahn was charged with attempting to break into the Chinese Embassy in Korea on February 14 while dressed as Captain America. He tried to enter as the embassy gate opened for a departing vehicle but was stopped at the scene.
On February 20 of the same year, he also caused a disturbance at Namdaemun Police Station, demanding to be investigated quickly. He kicked and broke the glass of the entrance gate and attempted to enter the building. During this incident, he verbally abused the police officers on duty and, when asked to show identification, presented a fake U.S. military ID.
He also claimed to be a former "black agent" who was active during the first Trump administration. However, it was reported that Mr. Ahn has no record of traveling to the United States and was discharged from the military as a sergeant in the Army.
At his trial on April 25, Mr. Ahn stated, "Even if I am released from the detention center in the future, I will always limit my performances to what is permitted by law, within the framework of legal compliance, and continue my social activities," adding, "I sincerely apologize for the significant administrative resources consumed and the harm caused to many people."
