Jeonnam Province announced on May 27 that, in the Ministry of Education's "Glocal University 30" competition, the "Dongshin University-Chodang University-Mokpo Science University Consortium" and the "Mokpo National Maritime University-Korea Maritime and Ocean University Ultra-Wide Area Integration" model from the Jeonnam region were selected as preliminary designated candidates.

This year marks the final year of the three-year Glocal University 30 designation initiative that began in 2023, and with two cases and four universities in the Jeonnam region being preliminarily designated, the outcome is being recognized as a meaningful achievement.

A total of 55 innovative proposals were submitted nationwide for this competition, and the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea conducted both document and in-person evaluations, ultimately selecting 18 universities for preliminary designation.

The "Dongshin University-Chodang University-Mokpo Science University Consortium," which was also selected for preliminary designation in 2024, drew attention by presenting a regional public-type small but strong university consortium model focused on realizing carbon neutrality?a future strategic task for Jeonnam?and fostering talent tailored to the local industry.

The "Mokpo National Maritime University-Korea Maritime and Ocean University Integration" model received positive evaluations for its plan to consolidate the maritime education capabilities of Jeonnam and Busan, two marine cities in the east and west, to establish a one-nation, one-maritime university system and cultivate advanced maritime talent.

Immediately after the announcement of the preliminary designation results, Jeonnam Province plans to launch a "Glocal University Dedicated Support Team" to begin preparations for the main designation evaluation in cooperation with the designated universities.

The dedicated team, which includes Jeonnam Province, affiliated organizations, and industry representatives, will jointly develop an implementation plan linking universities and local industries with the aim of achieving mutual growth for the region and the universities, and will respond to the main designation evaluation.

In addition, the province will carry out advocacy activities to secure final designation by closely cooperating with relevant organizations such as the National Assembly and the Ministry of Education.

Kang Jongcheol, Director of Talent Development and Education at Jeonnam Province, stated, "Following the designation of Suncheon National University in 2023 and Mokpo National University in 2024 as Glocal Universities, this year the Dongshin University consortium and Mokpo National Maritime University integration model have been selected for preliminary designation. We will focus all administrative resources to achieve the accomplishment of Glocal University designation for three consecutive years."

Preliminarily designated universities must submit a detailed implementation plan by August, and after document and in-person evaluations by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, up to 10 universities are expected to be finally designated as Glocal Universities around September.

Mainly designated universities will receive up to 100 billion KRW in national funding over the next five years (up to 150 billion KRW for integrated models), providing a foundation for them to become leading regional universities driving innovation in local higher education.
