Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province has conducted an intensive safety inspection to proactively prepare for natural disasters such as heavy rainfall and typhoons during the summer season.
According to the province on May 21, the inspection, which took place in the Wanju-gun area, was attended by over 30 people, including Governor Kim Kwanyoung, Wanju County Governor Yoo Heetae, and provincial council members Yoon Subong and Kwon Yoan.
Governor Kim inspected key disaster-prone areas in succession, including the Seokhakcheon embankment restoration site, farmland loss areas, and Yongbonggyo, all of which suffered significant damage from heavy rainfall last year.
In particular, the Seokhakcheon area suffered severe damage in July 2023 when part of the embankment collapsed. Currently, restoration work, including embankment widening and dredging, is underway.
Governor Kim visited the restoration site to thoroughly check the progress of the construction and to ensure that all necessary safety measures are being rigorously implemented ahead of the rainy season. He also urged officials to make thorough preparations in advance.
He then visited the farmland restoration site that had been flooded, confirming that garlic and cabbage have now been replanted, and encouraged those involved for their swift recovery efforts.
Governor Kim also visited Yongbonggyo in Bongdong-eup, where a flood warning was issued during last year's heavy rains. There, the underside and joints of the bridge were inspected using a drone camera. Together with a briefing from a private sector expert, areas that are difficult to check visually were thoroughly examined to ensure the safety of the facility.
On site, Governor Kim stated, "Although Wanju-gun suffered such severe damage that it was declared a special disaster area for two consecutive years due to record-breaking rainfall, thanks to swift response, not a single casualty occurred." He emphasized, "This year as well, we will establish a proactive disaster response system and protect the lives and property of our residents by inspecting evacuation plans and high-risk areas."
He added, "Recently, not only have natural disasters caused by abnormal weather increased, but the risk of various safety accidents is also growing. We will overprepare to the extent necessary to make Jeonbuk a safe place where residents can live with peace of mind."
Meanwhile, during the summer natural disaster countermeasure period (May 15 to October 15), the province is strengthening safety inspections for areas at risk of human casualties and large-scale construction sites.
During the intensive safety inspection period (April 14 to June 13), joint inspections of 1,457 everyday facilities across the province are being carried out by both public and private sectors, with active use of advanced equipment such as drones and thermal imaging cameras.
Going forward, the province plans to continue field-oriented administration that prioritizes residents' safety by thoroughly preparing for disasters.
