Ministry of Land to Launch First 'Smart City Data Hub' Contest... Up to 1 Billion KRW Support per Municipality

Applications accepted June 23-25... Three local governments to be selected in total
Pilot cases secured for bus routes, crime prevention, and more
Nationwide expansion encouraged through open source approach

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is launching its first public contest project to utilize the Smart City Data Hub established in metropolitan municipalities across the country. The aim is to expand city data platforms, which have so far remained at the demonstration level, into general-purpose services and promote joint use among local governments.

On May 15, the Ministry announced the launch of the "Smart City Data Hub Pilot Solution Discovery Project" for the first time. The Smart City Data Hub is a city information platform that collects various urban data?such as transportation, safety, environment, and welfare?into one place. The core of this project is to analyze and link data built by metropolitan local governments to develop general-purpose services that can be jointly used by multiple municipalities.

Since 2022, the Ministry has been building Smart City Data Hubs with metropolitan governments through distribution projects and other initiatives. Local governments have verified the functionality of the Data Hub by actually using it for COVID-19 epidemiological investigations, bus route optimization, and crime prevention.

The contest is open to local governments that have established a Smart City Data Hub in their metropolitan area. Additional points will be given for joint applications between metropolitan and basic local governments.

A total of three locations will be selected, with up to 1 billion KRW in national funding provided for each (matched 1:1 with local funds).

The Ministry plans to release the developed pilot solutions as open source, aiming to establish them as practical solutions that can be expanded to other local governments.

Applications for the contest will be accepted from June 23 to 25. Final selections will be made in July after evaluation by a review committee.
