Gyeonggi Province will conduct a proficiency assessment for companies that provide air emission facility measurement services.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment announced on May 7 that it will carry out a proficiency assessment in the field of air quality for 88 air emission facility measurement agencies in the province from May 8 to July 11.
Air measurement agencies in Gyeonggi Province account for about 30% of the 297 such agencies nationwide.
To enhance the reliability of measurement data, the Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment, together with the National Institute of Environmental Research, annually evaluates the proficiency of sample collectors at air emission facility measurement agencies.
The assessment items include stack dust sample collection and the operational capability of continuous automatic air measurement devices (for sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide). Agencies scoring 80 points or higher are rated as 'qualified,' while those scoring below 80 points are rated as 'unqualified.'
Agencies that are rated as 'unqualified' in the first assessment must complete specialized proficiency training and undergo a second assessment within three months. If they fail the second assessment as well, they will be subject to a six-month business suspension.
Hwang Chanwon, Director of the Climate and Air Research Division at the Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "As air pollution issues such as fine dust and ozone become increasingly severe, accurate measurement of pollution levels at air emission facilities is more important than ever. We will continue to do our utmost to enhance the reliability of data from private air measurement agencies in the province through systematic proficiency assessments."
