HL Mando began its North American localization efforts in 1996. After establishing an R&D center in Detroit, the company built its first manufacturing plant in Alabama. Following the completion ceremony for the Alabama plant in 2004, HL Mando completed its second plant in Georgia eight years later.

In 2013, the company established its second local R&D center in the United States, named "HM." The first R&D center, Mesa, is responsible for mass-production automotive technology, while HM focuses on advanced automotive technology. To date, HL Mando's cumulative investment in the region amounts to approximately $700 million (about 1 trillion KRW).

Kim stated, "Our North American localization efforts over the past 30 years have led to customer satisfaction," and added, "Going forward, we will work with GM to shape a new future in fields such as automotive software and autonomous driving, as well as other areas of future mobility."
