Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province announced on April 25 that it has launched a joint campaign called "Fortunately, It's a Reusable Cup" in collaboration with local public institutions, organizations, and companies to encourage the use of reusable cups in celebration of the 55th Earth Day (April 22 each year).

원본보기 아이콘The campaign was joined by 14 organizations and groups that are part of the "Gwangmyeong ESG Action Team," which was formed to address local community issues through public-private cooperation, as well as two major retailers: AK Plaza Gwangmyeong and Emart Gwangmyeong Soha. The Gwangmyeong ESG Action Team includes Gwangmyeong City, NH Nonghyup Bank Gwangmyeong Branch, IKEA Gwangmyeong, SK Sugar Gliders Handball Team, Gwangmyeong Sports Council, Gwangmyeong Urban Corporation, Gwangmyeong Youth Foundation, Gwangmyeong Cultural Foundation, Gwangmyeong Volunteer Center, Korean Red Cross Gwangmyeong Branch, Gwangmyeong General Social Welfare Center, Cheolsan General Social Welfare Center, Haan General Social Welfare Center, and Korea Racing Authority Gwangmyeong Branch.
The participating organizations plan to actively use tumblers and the "Gwangmyeong City Cup," a reusable cup model unique to Gwangmyeong, not only in daily life but also in meetings and events at the workplace. The city especially plans to provide the "Gwangmyeong City Cup" to organizations and groups in need, aiming to reduce the use of disposable products and spread an eco-friendly consumption culture.
The "Gwangmyeong City Cup" is a reusable cup that the city has distributed mainly to public institutions such as city hall, libraries, and youth centers since 2022. As of now, it is available for free use at 12 locations, including Gwangmyeong City Hall.
As of April 24, the "Gwangmyeong City Cup" has replaced a total of 373,460 disposable cups, and the city explained that it has achieved a reduction of approximately 17.93 tons of greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production and disposal of disposable cups.
Since last year, the city has also been supporting some cafes in the Gwangmyeong Sageori Food Alley and Muuigong Food Culture Street?areas designated as "Gyeonggi Province Special Zones Without Single-Use Products"?to offer take-out beverages in reusable cups.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, said, "This campaign, in which the public and private sectors have joined forces, will become an important turning point in Gwangmyeong's ESG policy, enabling citizens to practice carbon neutrality naturally in their daily lives."
