At the Gwangju Bukgu Council, concerns have been raised that the approval process for the 'The Hyundai Gwangju' complex shopping mall is being unnecessarily delayed.
According to the Bukgu Council on April 25, council member Shin Jeonghun stated at the 302nd extraordinary session held the previous day, "Bukgu District Office is delaying the approval process by conducting reviews beyond its legal authority and by excessively demanding supplementary documents." He added, "As a result, there are concerns that citizens' cultural and leisure activities may be disrupted."
Shin criticized the excessive administrative procedures of the Bukgu District Office, saying, "They are requesting documents that are not legally required, and even as of the 21st, requests for additional documents continued."
The Hyundai Gwangju is set to become the largest complex shopping mall in the country, to be built on the former Jeonnam Textile and Ilshin Textile sites, with six underground and eight above-ground floors, and a total floor area of 270,000 square meters. The developer applied for approval in February, and Bukgu District is currently reviewing the application through a dedicated task force.
In response, Kim Kyungjung, Director of Urban Management at Bukgu District, stated, "Due to concerns about potential traffic congestion near the site, we have requested a traffic impact assessment report, and we will handle the process promptly through the task force."
Shin also suggested, "Bukgu District should consider proactively addressing the traffic issue by utilizing 60 billion won in public contribution funds."
