A Festival Celebrated for Its Local Character with Torch Relay and Drone Show

Jangseong County in Jeonnam achieved both its first-ever 4th place overall finish and a flawless, accident-free operation at the 64th Jeonnam Sports Festival, which it hosted for the first time since its founding.

During the four-day event held from April 18 to 21, Jangseong County secured top rankings in multiple events, including winning the Taekwondo competition, finishing as runner-up in Kendo, and taking third place in women’s table tennis. As a result, the county placed 4th overall, marking its best performance in history. It also won first place in the Achievement Award category, further establishing its reputation as a “sports powerhouse.”

The successful operation of the festival was supported by the organic cooperation between local citizen volunteers and public officials, the provision of facilities by the education office and local schools, as well as infrastructure support from private companies.

Particularly noteworthy was the achievement of an “accident-free festival.” The county deployed 119 medical personnel and ambulances across 62 teams throughout the venues, enabling immediate response to a total of 375 treatments and 6 emergency situations during the festival. Injured athletes were quickly transported to local hospitals, and, at the request of the Boxing Association, emergency staff were immediately dispatched to check blood pressure as needed.

The torch relay also reflected the unique character of Jangseong County. A total of 222 participants, including local athletes and families with multiple children, took part in events such as the Jangseong Lake water relay, the relay at Philam Seowon, and the relay within Sangmu Base, embodying the region’s historical significance and community spirit.

Side events also received an enthusiastic response. Celebratory performances featuring Kim Yeonja, Lyn, Jeong Dongwon, and members of g.o.d, as well as a “multimedia drone show” with 300 drones, captivated the audience.

The rock festival held on a special stage in front of the county office attracted over 1,500 spectators who stayed until the end despite the spring rain. Local cultural experience events, such as calligraphy and hinoki cypress crafts, were also well received.

County Governor Kim Hanjong stated, “Thanks to the active participation of our citizens and public officials, we were able to achieve 4th place overall and an accident-free festival,” adding, “Building on this success, we will thoroughly prepare for the Jeonnam Sports Festival for the Disabled, which will be held next week.”
