Lee Manhee, Secretary General of the Ponyjung Foundation, stated, "The Ponyjung Foundation discovers and supports talented individuals who will lead innovation in our society every year. Through humanities support programs such as the Humanities Research Scholarship, Overseas Doctoral Scholarship, and Academic Support for Early-Career Scholars, we have established ourselves as an academic promotion foundation that fosters future talent." He added, "We will do our utmost to support early-career scholars who are actively conducting research both domestically and internationally, so that they can focus solely on their academic pursuits, thereby contributing to the advancement of humanities in Korea."
Lee Jungwoo (master's graduate from the Department of History at Dankook University), who was selected as a recipient of the Overseas Doctoral Scholarship and is about to study abroad at Indiana University in the United States, said, "I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has given me the valuable opportunity to become a Ponyjung Foundation scholarship recipient." He continued, "I will further deepen my academic expertise by integrating the knowledge I gained in Korea with Western research methodologies."
The Ponyjung Foundation established the Humanities Research Scholarship program in 2020 and has been awarding scholarships to master's and doctoral students majoring in the humanities at general graduate schools both in Korea and abroad.
Through document screening and interviews, the Ponyjung Foundation selects final recipients and provides annual scholarships of 10 million KRW per master's student and 20 million KRW per doctoral student, allowing them to focus solely on their studies until they complete one graduation thesis. Upon completion of the thesis, additional funding for publication costs is also provided.
Since 2021, the foundation has launched the Ponyjung Overseas Doctoral Scholarship program, selecting graduate students who plan to enter doctoral programs in the humanities at prestigious universities abroad and providing scholarships during their study period. Students planning to enroll in the United States, United Kingdom, as well as Europe and Asia were selected. For those in the United States and United Kingdom regions, 120,000 USD is provided over three years, and for those in Europe and Asia, 45,000 USD is provided over three years.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Ponyjung Foundation is carrying out humanities support projects that continue the late Chung Seyoung, Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Development Company’s, philosophy of fostering basic academic disciplines and valuing talent. The foundation plans to further solidify its reputation as an 'academic promotion foundation' by reviewing the addition of new, life-stage customized programs to support outstanding talent in the humanities.
