National Mokpo University Welcomes Democratic Party's "Establishment of Public Medical School" Plan

National Mokpo University Supports Lee Jaemyung's Plan
for Establishing a Public Medical School and Rationalizing Admissions Quotas

Regarding the plan to establish a public medical school and rationalize medical school admissions quotas announced by Lee Jaemyung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, National Mokpo University (President Song Hacheol) expressed its support, stating that it hopes this will serve as an opportunity to shift policy toward establishing a medical school that reflects the healthcare realities of Jeollanam-do.

Jeollanam-do is the only region in the country without a medical school, and it faces serious problems in responding to essential medical needs in underdeveloped areas and to emergencies such as industrial accidents.

In response to this urgent healthcare situation in Jeollanam-do, National Mokpo University and National Suncheon University have jointly pursued the national task of establishing a national medical school in Jeollanam-do through a historic 'national university integration' agreement, overcoming conflicts and competing interests between the eastern and western parts of the province. This was a responsible decision made not for the benefit of any specific region or university, but to protect the right to health and life of 1.8 million residents of Jeollanam-do.

Lee Jaemyung's pledge to establish a public medical school presents a direction that aligns with the realities of Jeollanam-do in terms of addressing regional disparities in healthcare and strengthening public healthcare.

The university evaluated that fostering regional doctors who will be responsible for essential nationwide healthcare and local medical services is the most important policy for strengthening the underdeveloped regional healthcare system, preventing regional decline, and achieving balanced regional development. Based on this healthcare policy, National Mokpo University urged the government and the political community to actively promote the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do.

President Song Hacheol emphasized, "National Mokpo University will continue to work hand in hand with National Suncheon University, Jeollanam-do and other local governments, the medical community, and the local society to ensure that the long-held wish of Jeollanam-do residents for the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do is fully realized."
