On April 23, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Kijae) announced that it will expand the installation of 194 additional 'smart security lights' in crime prevention reinforcement zones, bringing the total number of units in operation to approximately 1,200, in order to create a safe pedestrian environment where residents can live with peace of mind.
Since 2021, the district has installed and operated a total of 1,039 smart security lights, starting with 399 units, and this number will increase with the latest expansion. The district has installed 863 units along women's safe routes home and in crime prevention reinforcement zones, and 176 units in areas with a high concentration of single-person households. This year, 194 additional units will be installed in newly designated crime prevention reinforcement zones to further enhance urban safety.
Smart security lights are LED lights equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) controllers based on short-range wireless communication networks, and are linked to the 'Ansim-i App,' a safe return home support application. When pedestrians activate the Ansim-i App and pass near a smart security light, the brightness of the light automatically increases, illuminating dark streets at night.
In the event of an emergency, shaking the mobile phone connects the 'emergency report' function in the Ansim-i App directly to the Yangcheon-gu Integrated Control Center, causing the smart security light to flash. This enables both dispatched police officers and nearby pedestrians to quickly identify the location of the incident. The brightness adjustment function of the security lights also helps save energy and prevent light pollution in residential areas.
In addition, the district plans to apply Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to the smart security lights and install gobo lighting that visualizes a 'safe night street' image, thereby enhancing psychological comfort and enabling proactive crime prevention.
Meanwhile, Yangcheon-gu is working to establish a seamless urban safety network by implementing various 'crime prevention and safe community environment projects,' such as the Safe Village Security Guard, Safe Return Home Scout, safety equipment support for single-person households, and the Illegal Filming Citizen Monitoring Group, as well as operating the 'U-Yangcheon Integrated Control Center,' which protects residents' safety 24 hours a day.
District Mayor Lee Kijae stated, "We hope that the installation of smart security lights will alleviate residents' anxiety when returning home and improve the living environment at the neighborhood level," adding, "We will continue to prioritize residents' safety and do our utmost to create a safe city free from crime and accidents."
