On April 22, Wando County in South Jeolla Province announced that it will actively promote the 'Aquaculture Farm Cleanup Project' to protect the marine ecosystem and improve the environment of aquaculture farms.
This year, the county plans to invest a total of 500 million won to carry out marine sediment waste collection operations targeting 763 hectares of aquaculture farms in five fishing villages, including Jangjwa-ri in Wando-eup. The project is being implemented to prevent marine pollution caused by waste generated during aquaculture activities and to improve the marine environment.

Over the past five years, the county has invested a total of 3 billion won to carry out cleanup projects in 2,767 hectares of aquaculture farms across 26 fishing villages, successfully collecting and processing 868 tons of marine waste. The county expects this cleanup project to help restore the self-purification capacity of the sea, protect the marine ecosystem, and increase fishermen's income by improving the quality of marine products.
In addition, the county is accelerating efforts to improve the marine environment by investing a total of 4.6 billion won in initiatives such as mobile marine waste collection using cleanup vessels, operating the Sea Guardians 365 Mobile Unit, and purchasing waste collected during fishing operations. Furthermore, to restore the marine ecosystem and enhance fishery resources, the county is also investing a total of 2.3 billion won in projects such as creating sea forests for carbon neutrality, establishing and seeding sea cucumber habitats, and releasing healthy fishery seeds.
A county official stated, "We will actively pursue a variety of projects to create a sustainable fishing environment and preserve clean seas."
