On April 21 (local time), Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dongyeon responded to the passing of Pope Francis by saying, "He had a special connection with our country," and promised, "I will continue to live by bringing hope to others."
Governor Kim wrote on his social networking service (SNS) account that day, "Pope Francis has returned to God's embrace," and added, "We have lost one of the brightest lights that warmly embraced our imperfect and sorrowful world."
He continued, "The Pope walked in the footsteps of Jesus," and evaluated, "Jesus came into the world not to be served, but to serve, and he practiced love by seeking out the poor and the sick."
In particular, he emphasized, "He had a special relationship with our country," adding, "In 2014, he visited Korea and comforted the families of the Sewol ferry victims, and in 2018 and 2021, he met with President Moon Jaein and gave great encouragement to the journey toward a peaceful Korean Peninsula."
He also promised, "With the light the Pope has left us, we will illuminate and love one another, and take steps toward a better world," and added, "As he said during his inaugural Mass, even when deep darkness comes, we will seek the light of hope and bring hope to others."
Earlier, Vatican Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced, "At 7:25 a.m. today, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to the house of the Father," and stated, "His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and the Church."
