On April 21, Naju City announced that it will present a performance of 'Naju Samsek Yusan Nori' at 3 p.m. on April 26 at the Open Yard of the National Museum of Korea in Seoul.
Samsek Yusan Nori is a festival of harmony where women living in Naju Eupseong during the Joseon Dynasty transcended social status and class, gathering together to dance, sing, and share food.
Before the busy farming season, when spring arrives in the fourth lunar month, people would go to the mountains for spring outings, which were called 'San Nori' or 'Yusan.' It is said that men held poetry gatherings while women enjoyed the day by singing folk songs and performing Ganggangsullae.
Samsek Yusan Nori holds great significance as a unique cultural heritage of Naju, where equality and solidarity were realized through festivities even under a strict social hierarchy.
The Naju Municipal Gugak Orchestra has adapted Samsek Yusan Nori into a modern madanggeuk-style performance, presenting it as a representative cultural content that embodies Naju's cultural identity.
This performance is expected to help popularize Naju's cultural and artistic content through traditional gugak melodies, lively acting, and interactive participation with the audience.
Yoon Jongho, artistic director of the municipal gugak orchestra, stated, "Starting with this performance in Seoul, we will actively continue efforts to promote Naju's cultural identity and artistic value across the country," adding, "We will strive to make Samsek Yusan Nori a cultural model that presents new possibilities and directions for traditional arts."
Anyone can watch the Naju Samsek Yusan Nori performance at the National Museum of Korea free of charge without a reservation.
