The event was attended by Baek Younghyun, Mayor of Pocheon, National Assembly member Kim Yongtae, and other officials.
Following this, Deputy Prime Minister Lee held in-depth discussions at Pocheon City Hall regarding the establishment of the Pocheon-style Self-Directed Learning Center (EBS Public Learning Center), which is a key issue for the city.
At the site, there were a welcoming speech by Mayor Baek Younghyun, a presentation on the progress of the Pocheon-style Self-Directed Learning Center, an explanation of the Ministry of Education's plans for promoting self-directed learning centers, and operational proposals from the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) and the Korea Student Aid Foundation.
In particular, a representative of Pocheon parents participated and raised questions about the necessity, expected effects, and operational methods of establishing the Self-Directed Learning Center (EBS Public Learning Center), demonstrating high interest in the center.
One parent representative stated, "We expect that the Pocheon-style Self-Directed Learning Center (EBS Public Learning Center) will greatly contribute to improving students' self-directed learning abilities and narrowing the educational gap in the region."
Deputy Prime Minister Lee Juho said, "I highly appreciate Pocheon City's commitment and efforts for educational development. The Ministry of Education will also actively step forward and spare no necessary support."
National Assembly member Kim Yongtae also commented, "Since the educational gap is even more serious in rural areas, I will actively pursue educational policies to realize regionally customized education."
Mayor Baek Younghyun stated, "For the successful operation of the EBS Public Learning Center, the nation's first public-type academy jointly run by Pocheon City and EBS, we will systematically prepare from the planning stage to student recruitment and program operation."
Meanwhile, following its selection last year as a pilot (leading) area for the Special Education Development Zone, Pocheon City is further establishing its status as an educational city by implementing various educational projects this year, such as the "Pocheon Edu Road" project to improve student transportation conditions and "Pocheon Aebom 365," an elementary student care program unique to Pocheon.
Taking this meeting as an opportunity, the city plans to accelerate the establishment of the Pocheon-style Self-Directed Learning Center (EBS Public Learning Center) through close cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, and other relevant agencies.
