Park Sangkyu, president of Chung-Ang University, has indicated a firm stance in response to the collective class boycott by medical students.
At a press conference held on April 21, President Park stated, "Although all students have registered, only about 40% are actually participating in online classes," and added, "If there is no special communication or if students do not attend classes by the deadline of May 2, we will have no choice but to make them repeat the year."
He continued, "While there is an understanding of the unique nature of the medical school within the university, there are also differing opinions about granting excessive privileges," and added, "Since Chung-Ang University is not a university with only a medical school, we will use the remaining ten days to communicate well with the students, uphold the school regulations, and continue with classes."
Although the government reverted next year's medical school admissions quota to 3,058 on April 17, medical students have yet to actively return to classes. President Park said, "There is a sense of relief since the students' demands have been accepted, but it does not seem like they feel everything is over and are ready to return to their studies," adding, "We are continuing to persuade them."
Chung-Ang University maintains that if students return immediately, classes can proceed smoothly, and the university is prepared to operate flexibly by utilizing weekends and holidays if necessary.
President Park said, "Chung-Ang University did not receive an increase in admissions, and about 30 students from the class of 2024 have enlisted in the military, so the burden is not significant," adding, "The important issue concerns the fourth-year medical students, and if their numbers continue to grow, we will manage operations flexibly."
