Namdong-gu in Incheon Launches Electronic Braille Service on Website, First in Incheon

Namdong-gu in Incheon has launched an electronic Braille service for visually impaired individuals on its official website. This is the first time such a service has been introduced by a local government in the Incheon area.

The electronic Braille service converts administrative information and news posted on the website into a digital Braille format that can be read by visually impaired users.

Previously, visually impaired individuals accessed administrative information on the website using screen reader software, which provided information through audio services. However, it was difficult to convey the structure of tables and graphs on the website, and discrepancies between the spoken content and the actual text sometimes caused confusion.

After receiving a related civil complaint from a visually impaired individual last year, the district conducted an internal review and decided to introduce the electronic Braille service to provide administrative information more accurately and conveniently.

As a result, visually impaired users can now access both the structure and content of the website in digital Braille, rather than relying on screen reading. This is expected to make it easier for them to access various civil service information and district news.

The district has also been awarded the Web Accessibility Quality Certification every year, which is overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and evaluated by the Korea Web Accessibility Certification Evaluation Institute, in recognition of its efforts to improve website accessibility for both visually impaired and low-vision users.

Park Jonghyo, Mayor of Namdong-gu, stated, "I hope the electronic Braille service will help bridge the information gap for visually impaired individuals and support their social participation," adding, "We will continue to strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of disability, can easily and conveniently access a wide range of administrative services."
