During the approximately 90-minute class, the students made mini gimbap and prepared Injeolmi, with ingredients provided by Nokhyangwolchon Village, a local farm-stay community. They also enjoyed tasting the rice dishes they made themselves, gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of rice.
In particular, the young elementary school students praised each other's carefully crafted rice dishes, making it a valuable opportunity to understand the spirit of community unique to rural areas in Korea.
The Rice Cooking Experience Class is a program prepared by the Jeonnam branch of Nonghyup and the Jeollanam-do Office of Education to help elementary school students in the province experience a variety of rice-based dishes such as rice puffs, homemade Sikhye, mini gimbap, three-colored rice balls, Baramtteok, and Injeolmi. The program aims to foster understanding of agriculture and rural communities and to highlight the importance of rice. The Jeonnam branch supports the cost of ingredients and other participation expenses, and provides participating students with a small rice-themed souvenir.
Starting in early March, schools were able to apply for the program on a voluntary basis. Within just two weeks, applications closed early after 260 students from 10 elementary schools registered, exceeding the planned capacity of 250 participants for this year. Moving forward, rice cooking experiences will be held at two farm-stay villages in Gangjin and Gokseong until November this year, depending on each school's circumstances.
Lee Kwangil, head of the Jeonnam branch of Nonghyup, said, "Since Jeonnam Nonghyup and the Jeollanam-do Office of Education signed an agreement last year to promote rice consumption, we are grateful for the strong interest shown by many elementary schools in this year's rice cooking experience class, which was prepared to help students better understand agriculture, rural communities, and rice."
