On April 21, 2025, the city of Ansan in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will be accepting applications for the "Women's Self-Defense Safety Training" program for single-person female households in the city from May 12 to May 23.
The training will be held once a week in each of Sangnok-gu and Danwon-gu, for a total of four sessions, from June 10 to July 2. In Sangnok-gu, classes will take place every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and in Danwon-gu, every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The program is open to women aged 19 or older who are registered residents of Ansan as of April 14 and live alone. A total of 40 participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, with 20 from Sangnok-gu and 20 from Danwon-gu. The training is completely free of charge.
The curriculum includes the basics of self-defense, basic defense and striking techniques using Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo, and response strategies for various crisis situations. Residents interested in applying can do so by email or by visiting the Women's and Childcare Division at city hall.
Lee Mingun, Mayor of Ansan, stated, "We will continue to expand initiatives to create a safe environment where women can live with peace of mind."
