Jeollanam-do is conducting intensive quarantine measures on major roads around farms affected by foot-and-mouth disease using road de-icing vehicles.
According to Jeollanam-do, as of the 15th, there have been 19 cases of foot-and-mouth disease reported in Yeongam and Muan.
In response, Jeollanam-do has urgently deployed its road de-icing vehicles equipped with brine sprayers to disinfect major roads around the affected farms in Illo-eup and Samhyang-eup in Muan-gun, as well as Dobo-myeon and Gunseo-myeon in Yeongam-gun.
These vehicles, which are typically used for winter road de-icing and equipped with liquid de-icer sprayers, are now being loaded with quarantine disinfectants for foot-and-mouth disease. The plan is to continue these quarantine efforts on access roads to livestock farms until the outbreak is fully contained within the province.
This marks the first case in the country of moving quarantine operations for foot-and-mouth disease being conducted on major roads near livestock facilities, moving away from the conventional fixed quarantine systems. It is expected to greatly enhance the effectiveness of the quarantine measures.
Moon Ingi, Director of Construction and Transportation at Jeollanam-do, stated, "Utilizing winter de-icing vehicles for animal quarantine is an exemplary case of collaboration between the quarantine and construction departments, aimed at restoring Jeollanam-do's image as a foot-and-mouth disease-free region." He added, "We will continue to do our utmost to overcome crisis situations through mutual cooperation in the event of emergencies such as urgent quarantine or disasters."
