Starting with sweetfish, the first species to be released this year, a total of 1.02 million fish of seven species?including eel, Dongnam chamge, sogari, and dongjagae?will be released in 16 cities and counties, including Suncheon, by September.
After the release, measures to protect fishery resources, such as setting catch bans for each species, restricting fishing gear, and cracking down on illegal fishing, will be implemented.
From 2002 to 2024, the Jeollanam-do Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science has contributed to the increase of inland fishery resources and the preservation of an eco-friendly ecosystem by releasing 31.96 million healthy juvenile fish of 10 high-value species (worth 7.3 billion KRW) into major rivers and streams in need of resource recovery.
Kim Chungnam, Director of the Jeollanam-do Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science, said, "We will continue to release excellent fishery seeds produced in the region to directly help stabilize the inland water ecosystem, conserve fishery resources, and increase fishermen's income."
