Seeing the Future in an Abandoned Mine... Jangseong County Benchmarks Gwangmyeong Cave

Jangseong County in Jeollanam-do has begun drawing up a blueprint to develop abandoned mines in the region into tourism resources. The target site is Geondong Mine, owned by Goryeo Cement Co., Ltd.

Jangseong County recently announced on the 13th that County Governor Kim Hanjong and county officials visited Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi-do to conduct an on-site inspection of Gwangmyeong Cave. The group was guided by Gwangmyeong Mayor Park Seungwon and Seo Ildong, CEO of Gwangmyeong Urban Corporation, as they toured the facilities and were briefed on the development process, operational methods, and future plans for Gwangmyeong Cave.

Gwangmyeong Cave began as a metal mine in 1912 during the Japanese colonial period and was abandoned in 1972, remaining neglected for decades. In 2011, Gwangmyeong City purchased the site and developed it into a "cave theme park," making it a successful case of urban regeneration that combines culture, history, and tourism.

Governor Kim stated, "Through this field trip, I gained many insights regarding the direction for developing Geondong Mine," and added, "We will work together with residents, experts, and the administration to turn it into a resource that opens up the future of our region."
