Student Assaults Teacher for Prohibiting Game Play... Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Launches Investigation

A student assaulted a teacher during class at a high school in Seoul, prompting the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to launch an investigation.

On the 11th, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced that the Emergency Team for Protection of Educational Activities from the Gangseo-Yangcheon Education Support Office, which oversees the school, visited the school that morning to conduct an investigation and provide consulting supervision.

At around 10 a.m. the previous day, at A High School in Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, a third-year high school student struck a teacher’s face with a hand holding a mobile phone during class. It was reported that the student acted this way after the teacher pointed out that he was playing a game on his phone during class.

The moment the student hit the teacher was recorded by classmates. The school instructed the students who filmed the assault to delete the video. The student was separated on the same day, and the teacher left early for hospital treatment and has been on special leave since that day.

Jung Geun-sik, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, posted on his Facebook that "a distressing incident has occurred. I express my deep regret with a heavy heart." He added, "The teacher’s recovery is of utmost importance," and emphasized, "The Office of Education will prioritize supporting the teacher’s swift recovery." Superintendent Jung said, "There is still a long way to go to realize schools where teachers have firm rights to teach with pride and dignity," and pledged, "We will make more intense efforts to restore teachers’ authority."
