On the 10th (local time), US economic news channel CNBC reported that the total additional tariff rate imposed by US President Donald Trump on China is 145%.
On that day, CNBC cited a White House official saying that the tariff rate imposed by the US on Chinese imports is 145%.
Earlier, President Trump raised the tariff rate on China twice in response to China's reciprocal tariffs, increasing it from the original 34%. He set the first retaliatory additional tariff on China at 84%, up 50%, and then raised the tariff rate to 125% as a second retaliatory measure the day before. This applies only to reciprocal tariffs, and when combined with the tariffs previously imposed by the US on all Chinese imports?10% twice, totaling 20%, due to fentanyl (opioid painkiller) control issues?the total tariff rate on China amounts to 145%, according to the White House.
President Trump raised the reciprocal tariff on China to 125% just over 13 hours after the full implementation of reciprocal tariffs and postponed the country-specific reciprocal tariffs on other countries for 90 days. Accordingly, countries other than China are only subject to a basic 10% tariff. By narrowing the tariff front to China for the time being and with China also announcing strong countermeasures, the US-China trade conflict is escalating into a 'strong versus strong' confrontation.
