May Group Urges Withdrawal of Lee Wan-kyu's Nomination as Constitutional Court Justice for 'Undermining Constitutional Order'

The May organizations strongly condemned Acting President Han Ducksoo for nominating Lee Wankyu, the head of the Ministry of Government Legislation, as a Constitutional Court justice.

The three official organizations of the May 18 Democratic Movement (the Bereaved Families Association, the Injured Association, and the Meritorious Persons Association) and the May 18 Memorial Foundation issued a joint statement on the 10th, declaring, "We strongly denounce the nomination of Lee Wankyu as a Constitutional Court justice, which undermines the spirit of May 18."

The organizations stated, "It is an act that cannot be tolerated that Acting Prime Minister Han Ducksoo recently nominated Lee Wankyu, a former beneficiary of the May 18 Democratic Movement, as a Constitutional Court justice," and argued, "Although Lee Wankyu was recognized as a May 18 beneficiary for his struggles and hardships during his student days in the name of democracy, he has since cooperated with various state affairs that have undermined constitutional order."

They further pointed out, "Appointing someone who has been criticized for undermining the spirit of the Constitution to the position of Constitutional Court justice, who is supposed to be the guardian of the Constitution, is clearly an act that denies constitutional order," and demanded, "Immediately withdraw the nomination of Lee Wankyu as Constitutional Court justice, which has been the subject of public criticism for undermining the spirit of the Constitution."
