Michelle Obama, wife of former U.S. President Barack Obama, addressed the divorce rumors that have been spreading since earlier this year.
According to CNN on the 9th (local time), Michelle said in a podcast released that day, "People do not understand the decisions I have made and assume that I have divorced my husband."
The divorce rumors about former President Obama began to spread after he attended the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of President Donald Trump alone in January.
Michelle drew a clear line, stating that her absence from the two events had nothing to do with their marital relationship. She explained that she currently manages her own schedule. If her personal schedule overlaps with President Obama's, she used to attend his events together, but now she makes her own choices.
Michelle said, "I could have made such decisions years ago, but I did not choose freely. Now, I choose what is best for me on my schedule, not what others want from me."
She also mentioned the Obama Library, which is scheduled to be completed next year. Michelle said, "I am still continuing official activities such as speeches and consistently paying attention to women's education issues." Although she sometimes has different schedules from her husband, it means she has not stopped public activities as the wife of a former president.
During last year's presidential election, Michelle actively participated in campaigning for former Vice President Kamala Harris, giving support speeches at Democratic rallies.
The Obama couple has maintained their marriage for 32 years. Earlier, Michelle revealed in her 2018 memoir Becoming that she felt lonely and was in a state of exhaustion during her time in the White House.
