Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) operates the '7th Grade Youth Academy' for active seniors preparing for their second act in life to promote lifelong learning.
In response to the increasing super-aged population, the district announced that it is recruiting students for the Youth Academy, which offers various educational programs focused not only on simple leisure activities but also on relationship building and individual growth.
The '7th Grade Youth Academy' runs for one year, divided into the first and second semesters. Each semester consists of a 5-week course, with the first semester offering four subjects: Korean (writing), Social Studies (communication), Art (oil pastel painting), and Physical Education (strength training exercises).
The first semester courses will begin in May with an orientation. Classes will be held at the Gangseo Lifelong Learning Center (615 Gonghang-daero) every Monday and Wednesday from 2 PM to 6 PM for five weeks. After a two-month summer break starting in July, the second semester will commence in September. Various events such as class president elections, summer vacation, and autumn picnics will be held to naturally facilitate interaction among peer learners by evoking memories of school days.
The recruitment target is 35 residents of Gangseo-gu aged between 65 and 75. Participants must be able to actively engage in classes and consistently attend twice a week for four hours each day.
The tuition fee is 30,000 KRW per semester; however, those aged 65 or older are eligible for a 50% refund upon submitting an application, making the actual cost 15,000 KRW. Material fees must be paid separately each semester.
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from the 11th to the 21st of the month. Admission confirmation will be notified individually via text message after the application period ends. For more details, please visit the Gangseo-gu Office website (Notices/News).
Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon stated, "As we enter a super-aged society, the importance of tailored support for the senior generation is growing. We hope that the '7th Grade Youth Academy' will serve as a stepping stone for seniors passionate about learning to lead a vibrant and fulfilling later life."
