Hyundai Mobis chose Detroit as the venue this year because a significant portion of its recent global orders have been concentrated with North American clients. Expanding investment and cooperation with promising local startups where clients are located and jointly developing excellent technologies also makes it easier to promote products to clients in the future.
Detroit is emerging as a hub for startups. Many mobility startups equipped with automotive manufacturing, production and quality control, artificial intelligence (AI), and software are concentrated there. Based on regional characteristics, the promising local startups invited by Hyundai Mobis also took the stage as presenters, engaging in in-depth discussions on mobility trends centered on robotics and cleantech.
Under the theme 'Mobis in Global,' Hyundai Mobis introduced software-defined vehicles (SDV), electrification, and innovations in automotive electronics technology. Along with the business vision, they also presented achievements in open innovation and investment strategies. Hyundai Mobis North America Research Center employees gave the presentations themselves, adding vitality and expertise.
Mitchell Yoon, head of investment at Mobis Ventures Silicon Valley (MVSV), which organized the event, said, "Securing innovative technologies that will lead the mobility paradigm shift is becoming increasingly important through discovering excellent global startups and strategic investments. This year, we will expand business verification support such as technology and business feasibility reviews and strengthen cooperation to capture the market."
Since Hyundai Mobis established its open innovation base in Silicon Valley in 2018, the total amount invested in global startups has exceeded 200 billion KRW as of last year. Last year, they made a new investment of 15 million USD in the US semiconductor company Elevation Microsystems, and in 2020, they invested in the UK company Envisics to collaborate on augmented reality-based head-up display (AR-HUD) technology. They continue business cooperation with promising companies in core future mobility technology fields such as Zendar, a developer of high-performance image radar for autonomous driving, Light IC, an AI-based semiconductor-type LiDAR company, and Sonatus, a software platform specialist.
