The corporation plans to transform a total 1.8km (8,560㎡) section?including the green areas at Gangbyeonbuk-ro Nanji IC and Olympic-daero Gaehwa IC, which are major routes entering Seoul from Incheon and Gimpo International Airports, as well as the habitual congestion zones at the southern green area of Banpo Bridge and the green area at Hannam Bridge IC?into the ‘Maeryeok Garden’ where various flowers can be enjoyed.

On weekdays in April, an average of 240,000 vehicles pass through Gangbyeonbuk-ro and Olympic-daero daily. These roads are the first sections encountered by domestic and international visitors entering Seoul, greatly influencing the city’s first impression.

The Maeryeok Garden project will be implemented in phases until the end of the year. The detailed sections to be developed include 1.1km at Gangbyeonbuk-ro Nanji IC, 0.6km at Olympic-daero Gaehwa IC, and 0.1km at the southern green area of Banpo Bridge and the green area at Hannam Bridge IC.

This project will plant tree species suitable for seasonal changes, centered around Seoul’s symbolic color ‘Green Aurora,’ including crape myrtle, kochia, golden euonymus, and tricolor spiraea.

The corporation designed a patterned landscaping approach considering road driving speeds and drivers’ sight angles, allowing drivers to experience the changing beauty of each season.

In particular, at the habitual congestion zones of the southern Banpo Bridge and Hannam IC green areas, a ‘Blooming Relay’ planting of flowers blooming throughout the four seasons will provide emotional relaxation to citizens. The corporation plans to harmoniously mix low-maintenance shrubs and herbaceous plants to reduce upkeep burdens while creating a rich landscape. Existing trees from road structure improvement projects will also be recycled.

Chairman Han Kook-young of the corporation stated, “We carefully manage Seoul’s major roads so that visitors can feel the charm of Seoul from the moment they arrive,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to improve the landscape of expressways to enhance the urban dignity of Seoul.”
