Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 1st that it will hold three events of the ‘Y Education Expo 2025 National Youth Competition’ on the 15th and 17th of next month to strengthen the future capabilities of youth through artificial intelligence (AI), drone technology, and the principles of mathematics, which form the foundation of future education, and will begin pre-registration for participants starting this month.
First, the ‘ChatGPT English Speech Contest’ using the conversational AI ChatGPT will be held again this year. Co-hosted with EBS, this contest has received great response, with about 450 youths nationwide participating over the past two years in intense competition.
This year’s preliminary topics are ‘What will schools look like in 2050?’, ‘What kind of jobs will we have in the future?’, and ‘What can youth do to respond to climate change?’. Participants will submit an English manuscript created using ChatGPT and a video of an English speech presentation within 3 minutes on one of these topics for judging.
The contest is open to youths residing in Korea who are interested in English speaking and ChatGPT. Applications can be submitted from the 1st of this month until the 7th of next month through the official ‘Y Education Expo 2025’ website, and manuscripts and videos must be emailed. A total of 20 participants (10 middle school students and 10 high school students) who pass the preliminaries will compete in the finals held at the Yangcheon Digital Media Center on the 17th of next month.
The total prize money this year is 8 million KRW, divided into middle and high school categories: ▲Grand Prize (EBS President’s Award) 1 person per category, 1 million KRW ▲Excellence Award (Seoul Mayor’s Award) 1 person per category, 600,000 KRW ▲Merit Award (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 8 persons per category, 300,000 KRW each, along with certificates and prize money.
The ‘3rd National Youth Drone Soccer Competition’ will be held on the 17th of next month at the Yangcheon Park Drone Stadium. Drone soccer is a new concept leisure sport that combines information and communication technology (ICT), where a team of five players controls drone soccer balls and scores by passing through the opponent’s goal.
The competition is open to elementary and middle school drone soccer teams nationwide, with 24 teams being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the ‘Y Education Expo 2025’ website until the 30th of this month. The competition will be conducted in a preliminary league format and a final knockout tournament, with prizes totaling 4.5 million KRW including ▲Grand Prize for 1 team, 1.5 million KRW ▲Gold Prize for 1 team, 1 million KRW ▲Silver Prize for 1 team, 500,000 KRW ▲Bronze Prize for 1 team, 300,000 KRW, along with trophies.
Additionally, the ‘Y Education Expo 2025’ will host the ‘National Mathematics Structure Competition’ using recyclable materials collected from daily life. This contest involves teams of 2 to 4 elementary, middle, or high school students and one supervising teacher creating and presenting creative structures that reflect mathematical principles using upcycled materials.
The preliminary application period is until the 30th of this month, and portfolios explaining the work can be submitted through the ‘Y Education Expo 2025’ website. Twelve teams will be selected through preliminary screening, and the final competition, including structure creation and presentation, will be held on May 15th at the Yangcheon Digital Media Center. Prizes are divided into elementary and middle/high school categories: ▲Grand Prize (EBS President’s Award) 1 team per category, 1.2 million KRW ▲Excellence Award (Seoul Mayor’s Award) 1 team per category, 800,000 KRW ▲Merit Award (Yangcheon-gu Mayor’s Award) 4 teams per category, 500,000 KRW each, with a total prize pool of 8 million KRW awarded to 12 teams.
