Samsung SDI has begun mass production of the 46-pie (46mm diameter) battery, known as the 'next-generation cylindrical battery.' This is the first time a domestic battery company has mass-produced and supplied 46-pie batteries. Samsung SDI plans to expand its supply base after securing overseas customers.

The 4695 battery cells are produced at the mother line in the Cheonan plant in Chungnam, assembled into modules at the Vietnam subsidiary, and the initial supply is delivered to a U.S. customer for micro-mobility applications.
Samsung SDI started mass production of the 46-pie battery more than a year ahead of schedule based on differentiated product technology, manufacturing competitiveness, and quality capabilities.
Samsung SDI's 46-pie battery applies a high-capacity high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) cathode and a proprietary patented material, silicon-carbon composite (SCN) anode.
This reduces the swelling phenomenon where the battery bulges, while increasing energy density, extending lifespan, and ensuring safety.
Additionally, Samsung SDI applied 'Tabless technology,' which creates multiple tabs at the electrode ends to expand the current path, reducing internal resistance by about 90% and increasing output.
The 46-pie battery has an energy capacity more than six times greater than the existing 21mm diameter, 70mm height (21700) cylindrical battery. This means that the required capacity for applications can be achieved with fewer batteries.
Earlier this month, Samsung SDI showcased a variety of 46-pie product lineups including the 4695 battery, as well as 4680, 46100, and 46120, at 'InterBattery 2025' held at COEX, announcing plans to start mass production within the first quarter of this year.
Samsung SDI is actively discussing 46-pie battery-related projects with major electric vehicle customers. Starting with this supply, the company expects to achieve visible results in electric vehicles in the future.
According to market research firm SNE Research, the 46-pie battery market is expected to grow from 155GWh this year to 650GWh by 2030, with an average annual growth rate of 33%.
A Samsung SDI official said, "With this mass production and initial supply of the 46-pie battery, our product portfolio has become more diversified," adding, "We will secure market leadership through differentiated manufacturing competitiveness and quality."
